The Berlin airlift was a massive operation by the U.S. and British pilots to deliver food and supplies by airplane to Berlin after the city was isolated by a Soviet Union blockade in 1948. The blockade was a result of the Soviet regime’s attempt to gain control over the whole city, which was divided into four zones of occupation by the Allies after World War II. The airlift lasted from 26 June 1948 to 30 September 1949 and involved over 250,000 flights.
