With a total of more than 3,500 units, the Czech L-29 Delfin is one of the most-manufactured jet trainers worldwide. The prototype took off on its maiden flight in April 1959, deliveries to all countries of the Warsaw Pact (with exception of Poland) starting two years later. The by far largest customer with some 2,000 aircraft turned out to be the Soviet Union. Generations of pilots earned their wings flying on the Delfin. Almost all aircraft were kept in a natural metal finish with large areas painted in red for quick identification as training aircraft.
