A good 50 years ago, on 26.10.1973, the Alpha Jet took off on its maiden flight. The twin-engine aircraft, developed in German-French cooperation by the companies Dassault-Breguet and Dornier, was characterized by high reliability, excellent flight characteristics and maneuverability that still triggers enthusiasm at air shows today. Whether as a training aircraft, as it was used for decades in France and Belgium, for example, or as a light fighter-bomber, in which it was used in three squadrons of the German Luftwaffe from 1979 onwards – the Alpha Jet combined both tasks in a compact format. As a novelty, the first prototype, which underwent extensive tests from 1973 onwards, appears in its unusual livery with the insignia of both partner countries. Today, this aircraft is preserved and exhibited in the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance.
