The Aérospatiale SA.319 Alouette III is a light single-engine multi-role helicopter built by Sud Aviation. Including the licensed productions in India and Switzerland, more than 2,000 copies of the “Skylark”, the translation of “Alouette” from French, have been produced since 1959. Today, the air squadron of the police of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has thirteen helicopters for transport tasks, assessment and documentation during large-scale operations as well as the search for fugitives, the finding of missing persons or the rescue of injured persons. From 1972 to 1979, two Alouette IIIs were used for these tasks. While the police patrol cars in North Rhine-Westphalia were still in the colours white/green at the time, the undersides of the hull of the Alouette were additionally painted in a strong shade of red for better recognition. They also had a stop trowel on board to be able to stop vehicles. With a stopwatch and a distance-time calculation, the speed of heavy goods traffic could be measured on the basis of markings on the motorways and, if necessary, punished. Even though thermal imaging cameras or high-resolution video imaging systems were still dreams of the future, the Alouette still significantly increased the capabilities of the squadron at that time.
