Model Description
Herpa 1/200th scale 574006 South African Airways Douglas DC-7B with Saddle Tanks – ZS-DKD “Dromedaris”. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
In 1956, with the arrival of ZS-DKD, South African Airways became the first non-American airline to operate the Douglas DC-7, replacing the Lockheed Constellation on European routes. The DC-7B was the first SAA aircraft to cross the Indian Ocean and fly to Perth. In order to be able to cover the distances with fewer refuelling stops and ultimately reduce the stopovers to just two in Mauritius and the Cocos Islands, the airline equipped the four engines with additional “saddle tanks” with the well-known Springbok logo. The additional tanks could each hold up to 832 litres of fuel and helped to increase the range of a standard DC-7 from 7,400 to around 9,000 kilometers. A display stand is included.
