Model Description
Herpa 1/200th scale 573887 Aeroflot Ilyushin IL-62M – CCCP-86524. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
The Ilyushin IL-62 was the first four-engine long-range passenger aircraft designed and built in the Soviet Union. It allowed Aeroflot to serve destinations in Africa, Asia and even North America non-stop from Moscow – a major step forward over older, less powerful aircraft such as the Tupolev Tu-114. From the 1960s to the 1990s, the IL-62 was the main model for Aeroflot’s long-haul routes and was also used by other socialist airlines (including Interflug, CSA, LOT). Of the total of 295 Ilyushin IL-62s built, however, no less than 213 flew for Aeroflot. In total, it remained in service for over 40 years – a testament to its robustness and reliability. Aeroflot’s last IL-62M was decommissioned only in 2005. This IL-62 model also comes with the removable support wheel, which provided stability when loading and unloading the IL-62, which tended to tip over due to the arrangement of the engines at the rear. A display stand is included.
