In the mid-1970s, military aircraft designers became aware of the “stealth” properties and began experimenting with how such “stealth” properties could be implemented in aircraft designs. Although the program for a new strategic bomber with stealth capabilities had already been launched in 1979, the first B-2 with its revolutionary appearance was not presented to the public until 1988. Testing of the subsonic flying wing began the following year. The “Spirit of Arizona” was the second of six test aircraft and flew for the first time on October 19, 1990. Although the first B-2 Spirits entered operational service in 1994, the test program, in which new capabilities of the B-2 were continuously evaluated, was not completed until 1997. All six test aircraft, including the “Spirit of Arizona”, were then brought up to production standard and handed over to the 509th Bomber Squadron at Whiteman Air Force Base in the US state of Missouri.
