Model Description
Herpa 1/200th scale 573726 U.S. Air Force Boeing B-52H Stratofortress – 49th Test and Evaluation Sqn – “Test orange” livery. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
Inspired by the famous NB-52A and NB-52B test aircraft, this retro livery with bright orange finishes is a reminder of the B-52’s multifaceted history and constant evolution. Since 1957, the NB-52 aircraft have been used as launch pads for experimental aircraft such as the legendary X-15 hypersonic aircraft, or tests were carried out for new equipment to support the NASA Space Shuttle program. The last of these special test “BUFFs”, as the B-52 is called by its crews (BUFF – Big Ugly Fat Fellow), were retired in 2004. With the orange livery, the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron not only honors these earlier test aircraft, but also symbolizes the ongoing modernization of the strategic bomber. Although the B-52H entered service in 1961, it remains a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force and is expected to remain operational until at least 2050.
