The U-2 has been a valuable reconnaissance platform since its introduction back in 1956 – almost 70 years ago. In its current variant, the U-2 remains an important part of information gathering and reconnaissance for the U.S. armed forces. It is a very flexible and modular system, allowing sensors and cameras to be installed in its fuselage and in the two underwing-pods, as the mission requires. Such a module system that is only mounted when needed is depicted here in 1/200 scale for the first time: The huge radome on top of this Dragon Lady’s spine is a satellite communications system known as Senior Span. The pod is fitted to convey intelligence data collected by the U-2’s sensors via satellite beyond line-of-sight and to all corners of the globe without delay.
