A large number of models of the Douglas DC-9 in the colours of Swissair have already been created over the years. For a little more than two decades, from 1966 to 1988, it was the main model on short- and medium-haul routes. No fewer than 22 examples of the stretched DC-9-30 were in service with Swissair – including HB-IFW as a special example: it was the only full freighter in the Swissair fleet and as such was taken over by Douglas brand new in 1969. In Switzerland, it was retired again in 1984, but this did not mean the end for this DC-9 freighter: to this day (as of January 2025), it continues to be used for cargo flights, now registered in Mexico.
