Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 and took off on its first flight with a used Boeing 747 from London-Gatwick to Newark. Through the clever use of memorable and modern marketing and public relations, the airline has become the second largest long-haul airline in the UK. For more than three decades, a pin-up girl with the Union Jack, the “Scarlet Lady”, has adorned every aircraft in the fleet. This “Flying Lady” was recently replaced by five “Flying Icons”, named Meera, Ray, Zadie, Oscar and Daley. These five figures, which resemble the classic Scarlet Lady in style, represent a small part of Virgin’s efforts to be more inclusive and diverse. The second of four Airbus A330neos currently in the fleet, G-VTOM, is named Space Oddity, after David Bowie’s famous 1969 hit, with Daley as the flag bearer.
