Model Description
Herpa 1/500th scale 538381 U.S. Air Force McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender – 2nd BW, Barksdale AB (original delivery colours) – 79-0433. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 extenders left Travis Air Force Base in the US state of California. Since 1980, the KC-10 has been an important part of the American and Allied forces, flying air transport and aerial refueling missions around the globe. The KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135 and at the same time carry almost as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To commemorate the retirement, Herpa is launching a small series of the three-jet aircraft, limited to three models. The first model bears the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the last unit of the U.S. Air Force to use the extender (538367 Art.Nr). In addition to a KC-10 in the original delivery colours of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (Art.Nr 538374), the very first of 60 KC-10s built for the US Air Force with the serial number 79-0433 will also be issued in a limited edition in the original blue and white livery. It was finally retired in 2022 and can now be admired at the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base in the US state of Delaware.
