Originally produced in 2011 for Deutsche Lufthansa, the Boeing 747-8 with the registration D-ABYE was never taken over by the airline, but instead flown to the Mojave Desert for long-term storage. Ten years later, the aircraft found a new owner through the Egyptian government, who was looking for a replacement for his Airbus A340-200. The aircraft, now registered as SU-EGY, was converted in Hamburg by Lufthansa Technik with special equipment for government flights. Egypt joins an exclusive group of countries such as Turkey, South Korea, Morocco, Kuwait and Qatar, which use the “Queen of the Skies” for their heads of state.
