On May 20, 2022, this C-17 Globemaster was christened the “Spirit of the Candy Bomber” in honour of retired Colonel Gail “Candy Bomber” Halvorsen and his service in the Berlin Airlift 1948-1949 in the presence of his family. Gail Halvorsen became famous when he made small parachutes with sweets during the Berlin Airlift and dropped them from his Douglas DC-54 on the approach to Berlin for children.
