Hobbymaster 1/72nd scale HG3813 M20 Armored Utility Car unknown unit, Ardennes Forest, December 1944. Buy now online at Flying Tigers.
The American M8 was equipped with a 37mm gun and 6X6 wheel drive and was the main recon vehicle used by the US military during WWII. The only positive thing the crews had to say about the vehicle was it was reliable and fast on roads. It performed poorly off road, was very lightly armored with only sheet metal for a floor. It had an open top with no periscopes and exposed the crew to weather and enemy fire. Over 8,500 were manufactured in 1942 – 1943.
The M20 Armored Utility Car was also known as an M20 Scout Car. It was a converted M8 without the revolving turret and meant there was an open top but it did provide a certain amount of protection for the crew from small arms fire or shrapnel. The M20 had a top speed of 90 km/h and was quite agile which made it well suited for forward reconnaissance work. It is estimated that along with heavy Sherman and Stuart losses hundreds of M8s and M20s were lost in the Ardennes.
