The aircraft of the 517th Air Transport Squadron, stationed in Elmendorf, Alaska, will be deployed together with the 144th Squadron of the National Guard of the state. One of the eight C-17s is named “Spirit of the Sourdoughs” as a tribute to Alaska’s early history and heritage. In Alaska, “sourdough” has long been a nickname for hardy residents, dating back German to the time of the gold rush in the far north. This Globemaster transport aircraft was named in honour of the achievements of these early Alaskan pioneers.
