The ATR-72 played an important role in the modernization of the Polish LOT in the early 1990s. After the fall of communism in Poland, it began converting its fleet of Soviet-era aircraft to Western models. The ATR-72 was first introduced in August 1991 and replaced the Antonov AN-24 turboprop aircraft that had been in service since the 1960s.
