Model Description
Herpa 1/500th scale 538824 Crossair Embraer E170 – PP-XJC. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
After the rapid market success with its ERJ-135, -140 and -145 regional aircraft series, Embraer began developing a new and larger aircraft family with a capacity of 70 seats and more. The Brazilian manufacturer was able to win the Swiss Crossair as a launch customer, which placed an initial order for 30 aircraft, including 108-seat ERJ-190s and smaller ERJ-170s with a capacity for 70 passengers. The second ERJ-170 prototype with the Brazilian registration PP-XJC was then painted in the colours of the Crossair. The first aircraft was to be delivered in 2004. However, due to the financial difficulties and eventual insolvency of Swissair, as well as the subsequent takeover of the airline’s assets, a full restructuring of Crossair was initiated. Swissair’s regional partner until then was converted into a new airline, Swiss, which meant that the ERJ no longer really fit the new direction, so that the order was finally cancelled again.
