Asiana Airlines was founded in 1988 to break Korea Air’s monopoly in South Korea. In a short time, it developed into an internationally renowned airline with over 90 international passenger and 27 cargo routes in Asia, Europe and North America. The cargo division operated up to 16 Boeing 747-400 freighters, as well as a single Boeing 767-300 freighter. After several years of financial difficulties, the Kumho Group, owner of Asiana Airlines, agreed to merge with its main competitor, Korean Air. The purchase was completed at the end of 2024. By 2026, what was once South Korea’s second-largest airline will be fully integrated into Korean Air, bringing Asiana Airlines’ 38-year history to an end. To obtain approval for the merger and address international concerns about the emergence of a monopoly, Asiana sold its cargo division to cargo operator Air Incheon, including the only Boeing 767 and eleven remaining 747 freighters, including HL7616.
