Model Description
Herpa 1/500th scale 538374 Royal Netherlands AF Douglas KDC-10 Extender – 334 Sqn, Eindhoven AB – T-264 “Prins Bernhard”. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 extenders left Travis Air Force Base in the US state of California. Since 1980, the KC-10 has been an important part of the American and Allied forces, flying air transport and aerial refueling missions around the globe. The KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135 and at the same time carry almost as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To commemorate the retirement, Herpa is launching a small series of the three-jet aircraft, limited to three models. The first model bears the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the last unit of the U.S. Air Force to use the extender. The only foreign operator of the KC-10 was the Dutch Air Force, which from 1995 – 30 years ago – put two examples into service as part of the 334th Squadron in aerial refuelling also for NATO partners, who were often also used for peacekeeping and humanitarian missions worldwide. As part of the limited series for the decommissioning of the three-engine tanker, this model appears in the civilian-looking livery it wore when it was delivered to the Dutch Armed Forces in 1995.
