Model Description
Herpa 1/500th scale 538367 U.S. Air Force McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender – 60th AMW, Travis Air Base (Farewell Edition) – 86-0031. Available to pre-order at Flying Tigers.
On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 extenders, including the specimen with the serial number 86-0031, left Travis Air Force Base in the US state of California and made their way to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in the neighbouring state of Arizona, which is responsible for mothballing, recycling and scrapping aircraft. Since 1980, the KC-10 has been an important part of the American and Allied forces, flying air transport and air refueling missions around the globe. Often referred to as the “Gucci-10” due to its comfortable and generous equipment compared to other military jets, the KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135 and at the same time carry almost as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To commemorate the retirement, Herpa will launch a small series of the three-jet aircraft limited to three models in spring and summer 2025. The first model bears the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the last unit of the US Air Force to use the extender.
