In the 1950s, Turkish Airlines was looking for new medium-haul aircraft to take advantage of technological advances in commercial aviation. The Vickers Viscount, the world’s first pressurized turboprop aircraft, seemed to be the best option. At that time, Middle East Airlines from Lebanon had cancelled its order with Vickers. Turkish Airlines seized this opportunity and ordered five “Rolls-Royces of the skies”, as the Vickers Viscounts were often called, from the British aircraft manufacturer, which were delivered in 1958. Just one year later, Turkish Airlines modernized its appearance and introduced the “pyjama” livery with the red stripes on the nose and tail, which is still known today.
