In 2001, Sukhoi’s civil aircraft division began developing a new regional jet to replace the Soviet-made aging Tupolev TU-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42. On May 19, 2008, the time had come: the prototype with the factory identifier 97001 took off on its maiden flight. Herpa’s first 1:200 scale metal model of the Superjet appears in the Sukhoi factory colours with the eye-catching blue gradients on the fuselage. The program was plagued by technical problems at the beginning of series production; deliveries to mostly Russian airline customers were delayed. The difficulties with the first exports to Mexico and Western Europe, partly due to a lack of a maintenance network, as well as the sanctions imposed as a result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine did their part to throw further sand into the gears. So far, just over 200 units have been delivered.
