The F-4G Phantom II first flew December 6, 1975 and entered service as the replacement for the F-105G. There were 116 F-4Es converted to the “G” variant which inherited most of the “E” features plus numerous additions. The F-4G was the last Phantom II model in active USAF duty when it was retired in 1995 ending over 30 years of service with the branch of the U.S. Miltary. The F-4G was replaced by the newer F-16C Fighting Falcon equipped with HARM and HARM targeting pods.
McDonnell Douglas F-4EJ Kai 77-8399 is assigned to the JASDF 302 Hikotai (Tactical Fighter Squadron). To mark the end of the 302 Hikotai using the F-4, 77-8399 was given a special black paint scheme decorated with a large red eagle along the fuselage. The squadron logo is a tri-color white tailed eagle with the shape of the body representing the “3”, white tail “0” and blue wing “2”.
