On April 18, 1942, 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle took off from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to bomb the capital of the Japanese Empire in a daring action. The damage to the military and industrial targets in Tokyo itself was minor, but morale in the United States received a strong boost, while Japan’s belief in its own invulnerability was a major setback. To commemorate this risky endeavor, this B-1 Lancer of the 34th Squadron from Ellsworth, South Dakota, was given a special livery on the empennage. On one side is a B-25 Mitchell, which was used to carry out the surprise attack 80 years earlier, the other side shows the squadron crests of the crews involved at the time.
