Delta Lady XH558 at Sywell Tuesday 13th October 2015
It has been a busy few weeks at Sywell recently, but I had not been told, nor was I expecting, a final viewing of the Avro Vulcan XH558 on my very own doorstep ! After last weekend’s official last ever public display of the Vulcan , which I had sold out and I had missed out on, I had reluctantly accepted that this had been the last chance to see her in the air for one last time.
There had been reports that she would still fly this week for people to get a last chance to see her in the air, but I thought that if I was lucky, I might just get a glimpse of her in the distance perhaps.
Whilst I was at my desk, I heard the sound of a Merlin engine, and I popped out to the airfield and expected to see the regular viewing of a “Two Seater” Spitfire, which indeed there was. However, the crowd that met me was somewhat larger than the average crowd for the usual flights for “our” Two Seater. Then in the distance I saw why the crowd had gathered… the Vulcan was about to make a full private display over the airfield and then form up with our resident Air Display Team …The Blades.
Well you can imagine the atmosphere in the crowd, totally thrilled but also a lot of sadness.
I have taken a few shots(apologies for the quality they were taken on my mobile phone) , which I include here, but they do not give justice to a fantastic and somewhat “personal” display at Sywell. I have also taken a couple of video clips, and if I can work out how to get these into a newsletter than I will show you in a future edition.
